Foundation for Research & Technology – Hellas

The Foundation for Research & Technology - Hellas (aka FORTH ) (Greek Ίδρυμα Τεχνολογίας και Έρευνας -. ΙΤΕ (n. sg ) ) is a research center in Greece, which comes under the Greek Ministry of Development and is directed by the General Secretariat for Research and Technology. It consists of seven research institutes that are located in various Greek cities of Heraklion, Rethymnon, Patras and Ioannina. Founded in 1983, alszweite research institution according to the National Hellenic Research Foundation has FORTH today an international reputation and is one of the largest research organizations in Greece. The focus of FORTH in research and technology is located in areas of scientific, social, and economic interest, such as: computer science, molecular biology, laser, telecommunications, microelectronics, robotics, biotechnology, materials science, medical technology, Applied and Computational Mathematics, Biomedical and Mediterranean Studies, and Historical Studies. FORTH still operates Crete University Press ( CUP), an independent academic publisher.

  • Institute of Applied and Computational Mathematics ( Heraklion ) - IACM
  • Institute of Chemical Engineering & High Temperature Processes ( Patras ) - ICE / HT
  • Institute of Computer Science ( Heraklion ) - ICS
  • Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser ( Heraklion ) - IESL
  • Institute of Mediterranean Studies (Rethymno ) - IMS
  • Institute of Molecular Biology & Biotechnology ( Heraklion ) - IMBB

From 1987 to 2000, based in Thessaloniki, Chemical Process Engineering Research Institute ( CPERI ) also belonged to FORTH. In 2000, the CPERI of FORTH was split off, and was the origin of a new research center, the National Centre for Research and Technology Hellas ( CERTH ).
