Fountain County, Indiana
Fountain County is a county located in the state of Indiana in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Covington.
Geography
The County is located in western Indiana, is about 20 km from Illinois and has an area of 1031 square kilometers, of which six square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Tippecanoe County, Montgomery County, Parke County, Vermillion County and Warren County.
History
Fountain County was formed on December 20, 1825 from parts of Montgomery County. It was named after Major James Fontaine from Kentucky, who distinguished himself in the American Revolutionary War and was killed at Fort Wayne.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Fountain County 17 954 people in 7,041 households and 5,041 families. The population density was 18 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 98.71 percent White, 0.11 percent African American, 0.20 percent Native American, 0.18 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.28 percent from other races groups; 0.52 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.06 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 7,041 households out of which 32.6 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 59.1 percent were married couples living together, 8.0 percent were single mothers and 28.4 percent were non-families. 24.8 percent of all households and 12.6 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 3.00.
26.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.2 percent between 18 to 24, 27.9 percent between 25 and 44 years. 23.1 percent between 45 and 64 and 15.6 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 98.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 93.6 males.
The median income for a household was $ 38,119, and the median income for a family $ 43,330. Males had a median income of $ 33,957, women $ 21,631. The per capita income was $ 17,779. 6.2 percent of families and 8.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
