Fountain of Youth

The Fountain ( Fountain of Life ) as well as the source of eternal youth and the source of eternal life are often overlapping mythical notions of a body of water, whose waters the one who drinks it, eternal youth or life eternal promises.

Origin

The search for the fountain of youth is portrayed already in the Alexander Romance and found, among other things over here in the East (especially in the Syriac literature, according to some interpretations of the Koran sura 18.60-64 ) as in the Occident distribution.

The Spanish conquistador Juan Ponce de León searched in vain on his expedition to Florida in 1513 after the promised fountain of youth. Maybe he was following rumors of an island Bimini, on a fountain of youth befände.

Fountain of Youth in the Arts

" The fountain of youth " is the title of a painting by Lucas Cranach the Elder of 1546. The image depicts a bath in which aged from one side women get into the water they leave tapered on the other side. The plant is located in the Gemäldegalerie Berlin.

In the castle of Manta in Piedmont a large-scale fresco of a fountain of youth in the 15th century can be seen.
