Fouquebrune

Fouquebrune is a municipality with 661 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the south of the western French département Charente in the Poitou-Charentes region near the border of the Périgord.

Location

Fouquebrune lies at an altitude of about 145 meters above sea level. inst about 18 km ( driving distance ) south-east of Angoulême in the ancient cultural landscape of the Angoumois in the area of the Charente.

Demographics

In the 19th century the town had at times over 1,000 inhabitants; due to the phylloxera crisis in the wine and the mechanization of agriculture, the population then dropped continuously from the lows in the 1960s and 1970s.

Economy

The residents of the community lived for centuries of agriculture; the bottoms of the community belong to the Bons Bois of the vineyard Cognac, but the paragraphs in expensive wine fires in recent decades tended to shrink, so that the wine industry plays any role. History

In medieval documents the place under the name Fescobronna (956 ) Foscobrona ( 1107 ), Fuscobruna (1202 ) or Fulcobruna ( 1298 ) is mentioned. In the hamlet Chassagne was the former Benedictine priory Chasseignes.

Attractions

  • The unadorned church of Fouquebrune ( Église Saint- Maurice) dates from the 12th century; parts of the west tower only get - from this period are, however - after destruction in the time of the Hundred Years' War ( 1337-1453 ).
