Four causes#Material cause

The Causa materialis (also: substantive cause, material cause) is one of the inner causes according to Aristotle. It lies in the substance (Greek hyle ), " what something is created, and what is in this something, such as the bronze is the cause of the statue ."

According to Aristotle, there are four causes. The remaining three ( complementary ) causes are:

  • Causa formalis ( formal cause )
  • Efficient cause ( efficient cause )
  • Causa finalis ( final cause )
