Four Evangelists

The term evangelist referred to in the first place, the authors of the four Biblical Gospels of Jesus' life. As names of the four evangelists Matthew, Mark, Luke and John have survived, of which the Christian tradition Matthew and John equates with the same apostles.

Representation in the Gospel Book

The liturgical book that contains only the four Gospels, is called the Gospel Book. He presents the book painting from the 6th century often the representations of the four authors above, each writing at a desk their gospel. For example, they are in Reichenau Gospel Book of Otto III. shown that it is preserved in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in Munich, as well as in the Black Book of Hours of Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, in the Austrian National Library in Vienna. Similar scenes are known from the ivory carving and decoration of the choir stalls, pulpit, baptismal font, and the like.
