The Fox River is a right tributary of the Illinois River in the U.S. states of Wisconsin and Illinois. Along the Fox River, there are 15 dams that allow a partial navigability.
The entire region is called the Fox Valley. Originally lived on the Fox River, the Indian tribes of the Potawatomi, the Sauk and Fox.
Course
Wisconsin
The Fox River rises close to Menomonee Falls in Waukesha County. In the further course it flows through Brookfield, Waukesha and Big Bend in Waukesha County. He then enters the Racine County, where he happened Waterford, Rochester and Burlington. Later in the Fox River, the Kenosha County reached. There, he forms the western edge of Silver Lake, before leaving the state of Wisconsin in the direction of Illinois. The section of the river by Wisconsin is 110 km long.
A barrage in Waterford is a 4.9 km ² waterway. The river is characterized by Big Bend navigable to the dam of Waterford. The river flows through a series of small lakes, the largest of Tichigan Lake is.
After the river was dammed again at a small dam in Rochester, the Fox River flows through unregulated Burlington, where the White River flows. This section is very popular with tourists canoeing.
Illinois
The length of the river section from the border to the mouth is 185 km. After the flow has reached the territory of Illinois, it expands to a seascape that is known as the Chain O'Lakes. The largest city in this area is Fox Lake in Lake County. The river flows through on its further course to the south the towns of Johnsburg, McHenry, Holiday Hills, Iceland Lake, Cary, Fox River Grove and Algonquin in McHenry County; Carpentersville, West Dundee, East Dundee, Elgin, South Elgin, St. Charles, Geneva, North Aurora, Aurora and Montgomery in Kane County; Oswego, Yorkville, Plano and Millington in Kane County and Sheridan and Ottawa in LaSalle County.
Six miles downriver from the South Elgin Five Islands are in the river.
