Fox Theatre (Atlanta, Georgia)

The Fox Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia is one of the few remaining great movie palaces of the 1920s. It is a listed building and is currently used for various cultural purposes ( ballet, guest appearances by Broadway troops, etc.).

The Fox, located at the corner of Peachtree Street and Ponce de Leon Avenue in Midtown Atlanta was a creation of the architect Olivier Vinour by the firm Marye, Alger and Vinour. The Oriental-style building was to serve as a meeting place of the Shriners first, that bears traces of Masonic architecture, eg with regard to the " Egyptian Ballroom ".

The large auditorium with its 4678 seats are located as a replica of an Arab open court, including starry sky and ( projiziertbaren ) clouds. The trompe l' oeil - principle is otherwise widely used for the application. The Egyptian Ballroom takes a Temple of Amon at Karnak for example, the ladies lounge on the mezzanine floor is a replica of the throne chair of Tutankhamun. History

The planned Yaarab Temple of Shriners cost $ 2.75 million and could be completed only because of the financial commitment of the film producer William Fox. The opening took place on December 25, 1929, two months after the Wall Street Crash. After 125 weeks, the theater had to declare its insolvency. Despite economic difficulties in the 1930s, Fox was retained and celebrated in the 1940s as a kind of renaissance dance palace.

The television and the flight of white residents from the city centers to the suburbs at risk the Fox acute. 1974 should be torn down and give way to the office building of a telephone company.
