Foz do Arelho is a comune ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district of Caldas da Rainha. 1320 inhabitants live in it (as at 30 June 2011).

History

Since 1580 Foz do Arelho is documented as taxable village. In 1919 it became an independent municipality ( Freguesia ), by separation of the territory of the municipality of Serra do Bouro. 2009, the place to Vila ( town ) has been charged.

1892 sank off the coast of the town, the British passenger ship Roumania. Part of the wrecks lie off the coast due.

Culture, Sports and Attractions

The local beach is awarded with the Blue Flag, and is popular with tourists swimming and water sports. In the lagoon of Óbidos birds can be observed, and water sports are operated, namely surfing, rowing and Kiteboard, including

The small museum Núcleo Etnográfico has a permanent exhibition the history of the place based on traditional everyday objects and other exhibits. In the building of the primary school is also the library of the church, and housed the tourist information center of the town during the summer months.

Economy

The fishing and seaweed production in the local lagoon of Óbidos are traditionally important. However, the tourism today plays an assertive role in the place, with a variety of catering and hotel businesses. Inter alia maintains the Inatel here facilities, including a campsite exists here.
