Fraize

Fraize is a commune with 3062 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Vosges in the Lorraine region. It belongs to the district of Saint- Dié -des-Vosges, founded in 1996 for the Local Government Association, and is the capital of Haute Meurthe ( chef-lieu ) of the Canton of Fraize.

Geography

The small town Fraize located in the Vosges, in the valley of the upper Meurthe. It is about 15 kilometers from Saint- Dié -des-Vosges, the capital ( chef-lieu ) of the eponymous arrondissement, removed. The eastern municipal boundary runs along the Vosges ridge and at the same time forms the border along the Alsace region. The Meurthe flows through the municipal area of ​​south-east to west and takes a number of small mountain streams, which include the Ruisseau de Scarupt heard, whose five -kilometer long valley occupies the east of the municipality. History

Long deriving from the Latin Fraxinus (ash ) was considered as the origin for the name Fraize ( former spellings: Fracia, FRAIC ) - the inhabitants call themselves today Fraxiniens. Since the 20th century linguists interpret the origin of the place name from the Latin term fractura ( break) as a landscape form.

In the division of the empire of Charlemagne in the year 843 (Treaty of Verdun ) the area of the spell Fraize came to the Middle Kingdom, after several divisions of the duchy of Lorraine.

From 1221 the gentlemen exchanged over the area around Fraize before it fell from 1343 to 1766 back to the Dukes of Lorraine. From the spell Fraize, which included many scattered hamlets, created in 1783, the municipalities Fraize and Plainfaing.

From the mid 19th century, it remained as in other valleys in the Vosges Fraize the textile industry feeder. Many textile companies around closed in the 1970s and 1980s, only the company Shemsy SA, a sports apparel manufacturer, produced to date in Fraize.

Fraize is located on the National Road 415, which runs from Saint- Dié -des-Vosges over the near Col du Bonhomme and Colmar to Breisach am Rhein.
