Francesco Acri

Francesco Acri ( born March 19, 1834 in Catanzaro, † 21 November 1913 in Bologna ) was an Italian philosopher and historian of philosophy.

Biography

After studying philosophy and jurisprudence, which he completed in 1857 at the University of Naples, Acri went to the University of Berlin, where he heard the lectures of Friedrich Adolf Trendelenburg 1861-1863. Upon his return to Italy he worked in the teaching profession, from 1866 he taught history of philosophy at the University of Palermo.

In 1871, Acri was appointed to the Chair of the History of Philosophy, University of Bologna, where he remained until 1911.

His first major philosophical work is concerned with the theory of ideas. It appeared in 1870 under the title Abbozzo d' una delle Teorica idea ( design for a theory of ideas).

A wider audience, he is mainly due to its Italian translation of Plato's dialogues known, which appeared in various single issues 1862-1889 and 1913-1915 collected in three volumes under the title Dialoghi di Platone volgarizzati da Francesco Acri was reissued.
