Francesco Barbaro (politician)

Francesco Barbaro (* 1390 in Venice, † 1454 ibid. ), son of the senator of the Republic of Venice Candiano, was an important humanist and diplomat in Venice from the Barbaro family. He enjoyed as a philologist and connoisseur of ancient Venice and the Veneto high reputation. He was married to Maria Loredan, which was great-granddaughter, granddaughter, daughter and sister of a Procurator of San Marco.

Barbaro attended from 1405 to 1408 a school in Venice, and was then a student of Gasparino Barzizza in Padua. There he became Master in 1410 and 1412 Doctor. In Venice he continued his studies in Greek Guarino da Verona and continued translated into Latin in 1415 Plutarch. Since 1415 he was in the humanist circle around Leonardo Bruni, Niccolò Niccoli and the Medici in Florence. In 1416 he wrote on the occasion of the wedding of the patron Lorenzo de Medici his book about marriage.

In 1419 he became a senator of the Republic of Venice and held several public offices. In diplomatic missions, he served as the pope and the German emperor. From 1422 to 1435 he was Podesta of Treviso, Vicenza, Bergamo and Verona. Around 1440 he was a representative at the Council of Florence. In 1452 he was procurator of San Marco.

Francesco Zaccaria was the only son of a Venetian diplomat, whose son Ermolao became known as humanist.
