Francesco Carpino

Francesco Cardinal Carpino ( born May 18, 1905 in Palazzolo Acreide, Syracuse, Italy Province; † 5 October 1993 in Rome) was from 1951 to 1961 Archbishop of Monreale, 1967-1970 Archbishop of Palermo and later became a Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

Francesco Carpino studied in Noto and Rome Catholic theology and received on 14 August 1927, the sacrament of Holy Orders. He then worked briefly at the seminar of Noto, before he was from 1929 to 1951 lecturer at the Athenaeum in Rome. He also worked for various congregations of the College of Cardinals and did odd jobs in several Roman parishes. 1939, the honorary title of Papal Chamberlain secret he was awarded. On February 11, 1951, he was named by Pope Pius XII. Titular Archbishop of Nicomedia and Coadjutor Archbishop of Monreale, on 23 August the same year as Archbishop of the Diocese of Monreale. In addition to his obligations in pastoral ministry Francesco Carpino continued to work for the College of Cardinals. So he was appointed by Pope John XXIII. for ex officio proceedings of the Congregation for Bishops and appointed him Titular Archbishop of Serdica. In the years 1962 to 1965, he took part in the Second Vatican Council in 1963, he served as Secretary of the Conclave. On April 7, 1967 he was Pro- Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments. Pope Paul VI. took him on 26 June 1967 as cardinal priest with the title of Help of Christians Church of Santa Maria in Via tuscolana in the College of Cardinals, and appointed him in the same time as Archbishop of Palermo. On October 17, 1970 Cardinal Francesco Carpino resigned from the leadership of the Archdiocese of Palermo and took care of from now to the relations between the Curia and the bishops. On January 27, 1977, he was appointed Cardinal Bishop of Albano. He died on 5 October 1993 in Rome and was initially buried in his hometown. 1998 his body was transferred to the Cathedral of Palermo.
