Francesco Durante

Francesco Durante ( born March 31, 1684 Frattamaggiore, † September 30, 1755 in Naples) was an Italian composer of the Neapolitan Baroque.

Life

Durante received his musical education at the conservatories in Naples dei Poveri di Giesù Cristo ( by Gaetano Greco) and Sant ' Onofrio ( by Alessandro Scarlatti ). Later he devoted himself, according to some studies in Rome itself, a thorough study of the masterpieces of the Roman school around 1718 and was appointed director of the former conservatory, which post he exchanged in 1742 with the Director of the Conservatory of Santa Maria di Loreto.

From his history it is known that his passion for gambling frönende woman had once sold all his manuscripts. But Durante brought all his compositions from memory back to paper. They are now preserved in 62 volumes in the Paris Conservatoire.

Work

Durante's compositions include only the church and the chamber music ( for the theater he wrote nothing ) and consist of numerous fairs, hymns, motets, oratorios, antiphons and other works, which usually obligate for four voices and in the then new concertante style written are.

Its main merit is to have as a teacher and as a creative artist, the traditions of the Roman school of Palestrina for the Italian church music and in a time when the same was already running the risk of being flooded from the opera.

For this reason he deserves, alongside Leonardo Leo and other composers such as Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, Niccolò Piccinni, Niccolò Jommelli and Giovanni Paisiello, Ignazio Fiorillo to be called in the first place among the representatives of the Neapolitan school.
