Francesco Hayez

Francesco Hayez ( born February 10, 1791 in Venice, † February 11, 1882 in Milan ) was an Italian painter, a history painter, lithographer and engraver.

Life

Hayez studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia ( Academy of Fine Arts) in Venice at Teodoro Matteini ( 1754-1831 ) and in Rome at Pelagio Palagi ( 1777-1860 ) and was formed under the influence of Antonio Canova in Rome as classicists from. Since 1820 back in Milan, he moved to the School of the Romantics 1821 and became its leading artists. After Hayez had received the first prize of the Academy of San Luca and the Brera, he became a professor at the latter. In later years he tried to fit in large history paintings of the realistic and historical direction. In addition, his work from biblical paintings, portraits, frescoes existed. His paintings are characterized by romantic delicacy of form and truth of expression, less by the too soft color.

Works (selection)

In his portraits, he shows more photographic than artistic truth, as in the Cavour. His most famous image is of The Kiss, 1859, Milan, Brera.
