Francesco Laurana

Francesco Laurana (* 1430 in Vrana near Zadar, Dalmatia, † 1502 in Avignon ) was an Italian sculptor, architect, painter and medalist of the early Renaissance.

Life

Laurana was born in the then Venetian Dalmatia and entered in 1455 for the first time in Naples in appearance, where the Arch of Castelnuovo for king he. Alfonso V worked. Later Laurana had in Provence and 1467-72 in Sicily, where he specialized in the production of portrait busts. He is best known here with his bust of Eleanor of Aragon and Mastrantonio Chapel in the church of San Francesco d' Assisi, participated in the preparation Francesco Bonate. He often worked within the same projects as Domenico Gaginis, whom he knew from his work in Naples. 1472-75 he returned to Naples, but he spent his final years in southern France, where he built the Chapel of St. Lazare in Marseille and Avignon in creating sculptures. Laurana was a pioneer of Renaissance sculpture in Naples and France. Best known are his wife busts.
