Francesco Manfredini

Francesco Onofrio (Giovanni Romulo ) Manfredini (also known as Francesco Maria Manfredini cited; * June 22, 1684 in Pistoia, near Florence, † October 6, 1762 ) was an Italian violinist and composer of the late Baroque.

Life

Francesco Manfredini was the son of Domenico, a trombonist in the Cathedral of Pistoia, and thus was born into a family of musicians. He probably received his first music lessons from his hometown Kapellmeister Sebastiano Cherici. As a young man he moved to Bologna, to enter there as a chorister and pupil in the famous school of music San Petronio Cathedral. His teachers were Giuseppe Torelli (violin), Giacomo Antonio Perti ( counterpoint and composition ) and Girolamo Nicolò Laurenti ( 1678-1751 ).

After this time, he had a job as a violinist at the Church of Santo Spirito in Ferrara, probably due to the temporary dissolution of the " cappella musicale " of S. Petronio in 1696. According to the realignment of S. Petronio 's Chapel in 1703 received Manfredini a position as violinist ( suonatore ) and became a member of the prestigious " Accademia Filarmonica ".

During a stay in Venice in 1711 he made the acquaintance of the Prince Antonio I Grimaldi of Monaco, he joined for sixteen years in his service as Kapellmeister. He dedicated to the Prince in 1718 his Concerti Op 3

1727 Manfredini pulled back in his hometown of Pistoia, where he was at the San Filippo Cathedral until his death maestro di cappella ( conductor ).

Manfredini was married to Rosa degli Antonii, the couple had eleven children, five of whom were born in Monaco. Three of his sons were also musicians: the violinist Antonio Manfredini, the castrato and composer Giuseppe Manfredini ( possibly worked in London from 1750) as well as the composer Vincenzo Manfredini (* 1737, † 1799 in Saint Petersburg ).

Works

Manfredini composed as Kapellmeister in Pistoia numerous vocal works for church use that existed in manuscript. After disputes with the clergy Manfredini was instructed to remove his works from the music cabinet. So left only receive printed works from him.
