Francesco Maria Farnese

Francesco Maria Farnese ( born August 8, 1619 Parma, † July 12, 1647 ) was a Cardinal of the noble Farnese family.

Life

Farnese was the son of Ranuccio I Farnese, Duke of Parma, and Margherita Aldobrandini. His father died when Francesco was two years old. Under Pope Urban VIII ( Maffeo Barberini) tried Francesco's brother ODOARDO I. Farnese to strengthen the position of his family in the College of Cardinals and urged the Pope to appoint new cardinals from the Farnese family.

It was his successor Innocent X appointed Francesco Maria Farnese in the consistory of November 14, 1644 cardinal in pectore. The appointment was only announced on 4 December 1645. Cardinal Farnese took his title Diakonia never in possession. In the final phase of the Thirty Years' War, Cardinal Farnese tried to keep a balance between France and Spain. After the death of Duke ODOARDO In 1646 he and Margherita de ' Medici led the regency for his underage nephew still Ranuccio II Farnese. He died in 1647 after six months of illness at age 27 in his hometown. His grave is located in the Capuchin church of Parma.
