Francesco Morlacchi

Francesco Giuseppe Baldassarre Morlacchi ( born June 14, 1784 in Perugia, † October 28, 1841 in Innsbruck ) was an Italian composer and conductor.

Life

Morlacchi was the pupil of Giovanni Mazetto in Perugia, Luigi Caruso, Niccolò Antonio Zingarelli in Loreto and Stanislao Mattei in Bologna. In 1810 he came to mediating the singer Marietta Marcolini to Dresden and was the successor of Ferdinando Paer from 1811 until his death, court conductor of the Italian opera in Dresden. He was responsible for three areas Catholic church music, opera and courtly chamber and orchestral music. He died in Innsbruck during a trip to Pisa. His death marked the end of the department " Italian Opera " in Dresden. The theater of his hometown of Perugia was named " Teatro Morlacchi " after him; also the Conservatory in Perugia bears his name.

Morlacchi wore in Dresden greatly to the development of "romantic" music on and was due to his musical expression referred to as " romantic Italian " conducting the Dresden court orchestra. He was the initiator of the Dresden Palm Sunday concerts and took (along with Carl Gottlieb Reißiger ) the revival of Bach's St. Matthew Passion in Dresden.
