Francesco Ragonesi

Francesco Cardinal Ragonesi ( born December 21, 1850 in Bagnaia, Viterbo Province, Italy, † September 14, 1931 in Poggio a Caiano, Prato province ) was a Vatican diplomat and later became a Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

Francesco Ragonesi completed his studies in Viterbo and Rome on with doctorates in philosophy, theology, canon law and civil law. After his ordination he worked for a short time in parish ministry before he taught from 1879 at the seminary of Viterbo history and Biblical Theology. From 1885 to 1904 performed the duties of the Vicar General. 1889 awarded him Leo XIII. with the title of Pontifical domestic prelates from.

On September 14, 1904, Pope Pius X appointed apostolic delegate for Colombia and Titular Archbishop of Myra. He received his episcopal consecration Rafael Cardinal Merry del Val y Zulueta on September 25th of that year. From 1913 to 1921 he acted as Apostolic Nuncio of the Holy See in Spain. 1921 took him Pope Benedict XV. as cardinal priest with the titular church of San Marcello in the College of Cardinals. Cardinal Ragonesi took part in the conclave in the following year 1922. In May 1924, he served as papal representative in a Eucharistic Congress in Lazio. Pope Pius XI. appointed Francesco Ragonesi 1926 Cardinal Prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura. From December 17 1928 to July 17, 1929, he was treasurer of the College of Cardinals.

Cardinal Ragonesi died on September 14, 1931 during a recovery stay in the Mother House of the Sisters of the Sacred Heart in Poggio a Caiano.
