Francesco Squarcione

Francesco Squarcione (* around 1397 in Padua; † around 1468 in Padua ) was an Italian painter of the Paduan school.

Life and work

Francesco Squarcione is documented for the years 1419 and 1423 as tailors and embroiderers. It was not until 1429 he was first mentioned as a painter. About his apprenticeship is unknown, but it may be out of his few works detect an influence of Fra Filippo Lippi, Donatello and Antonio Vivarini.

Activities he was mainly in Padua, where he ran a large workshop and had a collection of plaster casts of antique works and a collection of drawings of various artists. These served as demonstration and study material for its employees. He claimed to be an excellent teacher, but in reality he exploited the talent of his students shamelessly. The most talented he tried fixed by refined sophisticated contracts and adoptions and to bind to the long term. The most important pupil and adopted son was Andrea Mantegna, who was working in his workshop from 1441 to 1448 before he was able to break away from Squarcione and their own way to go. Other notable students were among other Giorgio Schiavone and Marco Zoppo.

What is the handwritten portion of which emerged from the workshop images is not known, and from the works also difficult to read. Of the few remaining, associated with his name panel paintings are only two works in Berlin and Padua, recognized as undisputed. Both works were painted for the resident family in Padua de Lazzara. 1958 succeeded to uncover remains of the executed Squarcione frescoes for San Francesco in Padua, belonging to the late works from his workshop and show scenes from the life of St. Francis of Padua.
