Francesco Terzi

Francesco Terzio (* 1523 in Bergamo, † August 20, 1591 in Rome) was an Italian painter, etcher and engraver. He worked most of his life as a painter at the court of Emperor Maximilian II in Vienna. From him many family portraits of the Habsburgs come.

Life

Terzio comes from a resident of Bergamo noble family and was born there, the son of Cristoforo Baltreschini de Tertio. In 1551 he came to Austria to work as a court painter of Archduke Ferdinand II. In the following years Terzio changed hands several times between Vienna and Prague, the residence of the Habsburgs to perform various jobs for the imperial family. As court painter, he went at least once in 1557 to Bergamo. There Terzio closed a contract with the parents of Francesco Gozzi, to take him as a pupil, and made in the Palazzo Conte Grumelli a ceiling painting.

In Vienna can be full body portraits of Emperor Ferdinand I, the Empress Isabella and the Empress Anna find with daughters. 1553 Terzio created a family portrait with the later Emperor Maximilian II, which today is located in Innsbruck Ambras Castle and the portraits of the four sisters of Archduke Ferdinand. In 1556 he made for the at this time King Ferdinand of three paintings that were intended for the chapel in Linz. In the years 1560-1563 Terzio painted at the request of Emperor Ferdinand I the organ in the Hofkirche to Prague. In 1562 he developed several drafts of the Singing fountain in Prague courtyard garden. The order for the fountain came again from Emperor Ferdinand I, while Archduke Ferdinand II oversaw the construction. 1564, he was dismissed at his own request of Archduke Ferdinand as a court artist.

At the design of the 1570 published in Prague Czech Bible Terzio was involved with illustrations, as some of his monograms point to form sections. In Bergamo Terzio resulted from two altarpieces for the church of San Francesco, who had been appointed in 1579. After 1580 he lived probably in Venice, where he worked on the decoration of the Sala dello Scrutinio in the Doge's Palace. In August 1581 Terzio completed two images for the Presbytery of San Simpliciano in Milano.

His last years were spent Terzio in Rome, where he became in 1590 a member of the Congregation dei Virtuosi al Pantheon (Assembly of champion Pantheon ).
