Francesco Tricomi

Francesco Giacomo Tricomi ( born May 5, 1897 in Naples, † November 21, 1978 in Turin ) was an Italian mathematician who, specifically dealt with Analysis Differential Equations.

Life and work

Francesco Tricomi studied in Bologna and Naples, where he received his diploma in 1918. After that, he was assistant to Francesco Severi first in Padua and then in Rome. In 1925 he was in Florence and finally at the University of Turin, where he held the Analysis Department until his retirement in 1967. 1943 to 1945 and 1948 to 1951 he was involved in the Caltech at Bateman Manuscript Project under the direction of Arthur Erdélyi.

Tricomi worked in many areas of analysis. He became known in 1923 through the study of partial differential equation named after him ( the " mixed type " )

She found, for example, application in the theory of supersonic flows. Also a type of special functions is named after him. He was also interested in the history of mathematics.

Tricomi was a member of the Accademia dei Lincei, which honored him in 1961 with an Antonio Feltrinelli Prize, and the Turin Academy. He was editor of the journal Aequationes Mathematicae.

The asteroid ( 31189 ) Tricomi was named after him on 28 March 2002.
