Francis Aidan Gasquet

Francis Aidan Cardinal Gasquet OSB ( born October 5, 1846 in London as Neil Francis Gasquet, United Kingdom, † April 5, 1929 in Rome ) was a Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

Francis Aidan Gasquet resigned after his school days in 1866 in the Benedictine Abbey of Downside, and was given the religious name of Aiden. He was a seminarian at the Pontifical English College in Rome and studied Catholic theology. In 1874 he received the sacrament of Holy Orders, and then worked for seven years as a teacher. From 1878 to 1885 he served as prior of the Abbey of Downside. From 1892 to 1900 he was a researcher for services in the British Museum in London. Since 1896 he was a member of the Pontifical Commission for the verification of the validity of Anglican ordination actions. His findings contributed sustainably to the fact that the Anglican ordinations were declared invalid.

In 1900 he became abbot of Downside and first Abbot President of the English Benedictine Congregation, which he previously commissioned by Pope Leo XIII. had rearranged. From 1907 he was a member of the Pontifical Commission for the Revision of the Vulgate. On 29 May 1914, he was received by Pope Pius X as a cardinal deacon with the titular church of San Giorgio in Velabro in the College of Cardinals and was subsequently a member of many congregations. He also took over during the 1st World War and diplomatic missions to the Holy See for the Entente Powers. 1915 changed the title Gasquet Church and assumed the title of Santa Maria in Portico. 1917 already Prefect of the Papal Secret Archives 1919 he received the appointment as cardinal librarian and archivist in 1920 and the Holy Roman Church. In 1924 he was raised to the per hac vice cardinal priest of his title Diakonia Santa Maria in Portico. Francis Aidan Cardinal Gasquet died on 5 April 1929 in Rome.
