Francis Borgia, 4th Duke of Gandía

Francesc de Borja ( Valencian ), Francisco de Borja ( Spanish) or Francesco Borgia (Italian) ( German Francis Borgia; * October 28, 1510 in Gandia, Valencia Province; † September 30 / October 1, 1572 in Rome ) was the third general of the Jesuits.

Life

Francisco de Borja comes from the infamous Borgia family. He was the son of Juan de Borja, 3rd Duke of Gandia, son of Juan Borgia and Maria Enriquez de Luna i, and his first wife, Juana de Aragón y Gurrea ( 1492-1520 ), daughter of Alonso de Aragón, Archbishop of Zaragoza and Valencia, and Ana de Gurrea, señora de Argabieso. He was thus great-grandson of Pope Alexander VI. ( paternal ) and King Ferdinand II of Aragon ( mother's side).

De Borja was educated at Juan de Aragon, his mother's brother and Archbishop of Saragossa. In 1528, he went to the court of the Emperor Charles V. to come into its services.
