Francis Cadell (artist)

Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell ( born April 12, 1883 in Edinburgh, † December 6, 1937 in Edinburgh) was a British painter from the group of Scottish colourists.

Life

At the age of 16 years Cadell went to Paris to study at the Académie Julian. Contact with the French avant-garde, Fauvism, and especially the proximity to Henri Matisse were instrumental in the development of his artistic career. After his return to Scotland, his works were exhibited regularly in Edinburgh, Glasgow and London.

Cadell painted numerous landscapes, interiors, still life and figurative representations in both oil as well as watercolors. However, it is particularly well known for his portraits in vibrant colors.

One of his favorite landscapes was the Scottish Hebridean island of Iona, which he first visited in 1912 and occupies a central role in his landscapes. In the 1920s, he spent several summers there with Samuel Peploe, another painter of the group of Scottish colourists.

His younger sister was the actress Jean Cadell.
