Francis Cotes

Francis Cotes RA ( * 1725 in London, † July 20, 1770 ) was an English painter and is considered a pioneer of pastel painting. In 1768 he was one of the founding members of the Royal Academy of Arts.

Life

Cotes was a pupil of the painter George Knapton. But it was only about forty years Cotes could debut at an exhibition of the Society of Artists. In the years 1760-1761 he made the oil painting The nut - brown maid and half length of Mr. Paul, with whom he also gained recognition in the Society.

During the summer months Cotes worked in some years also in Bath. He was often also active as a portrait - enameller.

After the death of his first wife, he married his second wife Sarah Shepherd. This should also be acted as a painter. At the age of about 45 years, Francis Cotes died on 20 July 1770 in London.
