Francis Doyle Gleeson

Francis Doyle Gleeson SJ ( born January 17, 1895 in Carrollton, Missouri; † 30 April 1983) was Bishop of Fairbanks.

Life

Francis Doyle Gleeson joined the Jesuit order, and received on 29 July 1926, the sacrament of Holy Orders.

Pope Pius XII. appointed him on 8 January 1948 to the Vicar Apostolic of Alaska and titular bishop of cotenna. The Archbishop of Portland in Oregon, Edward Daniel Howard, donated to him on April 5th of that year, the episcopal ordination; Co-consecrators were the Bishop of Spokane, Charles Daniel White, and the Bishop of Nelson, Martin Michael Johnson.

With the elevation of the Apostolic Vicariate of Alaska to the rank of a bishopric and the renaming Gleeson was born on August 8, 1962 the first bishop of Fairbanks.

Francis Doyle Gleeson attended all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council as part of a Council Father.

On November 15, 1968, Pope Paul VI. his resignation as Bishop of Fairbanks and appointed him titular bishop of Cuicul. In the titular Gleeson waived with effect from 15 January 1971.
