Francis Garnier

Francis Garnier (* July 25, 1839 in Saint- Étienne, † December 21, 1873 in Hanoi ) was a French explorer.

Garnier joined the French Navy and made from 1860 to 1862 as an ensign in the campaign China and Cochinchina with, was hired in the new French colony and headed to the death Lagrées 1868, the further investigation of the Mekong. Here he penetrated up to Dali and sailed the Yangtze River to Han -kou, now Wuhan.

He returned to France and took part in the Franco-German War. From May to August 1873, he traveled from the Dongting Lake in China and the Jüankliang Paibo up to the limit of Sichuan.

He was then called back to Saigon sent a military expedition to Tonkin. He participated in the November 20, 1873 Hanoi, but fell on 21 December in the fight against Chinese pirate gangs.
