Francis Hunter

Francis Townsend "Frank" Hunter ( born June 28, 1894 in New York; † December 2, 1981 in Palm Beach, Florida) was an American tennis player.

Career

In 1916, Hunter graduated from Cornell University.

In 1923 he was in the final of Wimbledon. Hunter lost to the American Bill Johnston smooth in three sets 0:6, 3:6 and 1:6. In doubles, he won in 1924 with Vincent Richards against the Americans Richard Williams and Watson Washburn in five sets 6:3, 3:6, 8:10, 8:6 and 6:3. He could repeat this success in 1927 with Bill Tilden. They defeated the French Henri Cochet and Jacques Brugnon in five sets with 1:6, 4:6, 8:6, 6:3 and 6:4 after Hunter both already beat in the final of the Olympic Summer Games in 1924, together with Vincent Richards. Competition in the mixed doubles in 1927 he was able to win with Elizabeth Ryan in two sets 8:6 and 6:0 against Leslie Godfree and Kathleen McKane Godfree and 1929 with Helen Wills Moody against Ian Collins and Joan Fry in two sets 6-1 and 6:4.

In 1927, Frank Hunter and Bill Tilden won the American Tennis Championships in doubles against their compatriots William Johnston and Richard Norris Williams in three sets with 10:8, 6:3 and 6:3. In individual he reached the finals in 1928 and 1929, losing to Cochet in five sets with 6:4, 4:6, 6:3, 5:7 and 3:6, as well as against Tilden in five sets 6-3, 3: 6, 6:4, 2:6 and 4:6.

In the French Tennis Championships in mixed doubles, he managed two Finaleinzüge. In 1928 he was defeated by Helen Wills Moody Eileen Bennett Whittingstall and Henri Cochet in three sets 6:3, 3:6 and 3:6. 1929 there was a new edition of the finals from the previous year. Hunter and Wills Moody lost in two sets 6-3, 6-2.

Hunter was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1961.
