Francis Jammes

Francis Jammes ( born December 2, 1868 in Tournay, Hautes -Pyrenees, France, † November 1, 1938 in Hasparren, Pyrénées- Atlantiques) was a French poet.

Life

Jammes spent most of his life in his native region to Béarn and the Basque country and left his home in his literature incorporated. His first poetic attempts were circulating in 1895 in the Parisian literary circles. He was especially known for its fresh and full of poetry, with a poetic renovation began that broke with the Symbolist tendencies of his time. He often met with other poets, especially with André Gide, with whom he resided in 1896 in Algeria, as well as Mallarmé and Henri de Régnier. Later he was also influenced by Paul Claudel.

His most famous collection of De L' Angelus de l' aube à l' Angelus du soir appeared in 1897 in the Mercure de France, Le Deuil of Primevères (1901 ) was also well received. He had previously worked as a notary assistant, but could live with from now on his literature. In 1905 he converted, inspired by Claudel, to Catholicism, his poetry was religious and dogmatic.

In the Parisians circles Jammes was never properly recognized, he was regarded as essential Proven, lived lonely and withdrawn in the Pyrenean mountains. He tried several times to be admitted to the Académie française, his application was rejected each time.

From Jammes also comes the inspiration for Georges Brassens ' song La Prière. This is an excerpt of his poem Les mystères douloureux from the L' église de feuilles habillée (1906 ) collection. Brassens has changed a few words to make the text more rhythmic.
