Francis Malbone

Francis Malbone ( born March 20, 1759 in Newport, Rhode Iceland, † June 4, 1809 in Washington DC) was an American politician of the Federalist Party, who represented the state of Rhode Iceland in both chambers of the U.S. Congress.

After he had only received a very limited education, Francis Malbone began to work as a merchant in Newport. In artillery regiment his hometown, which was part of the state militia, he held 1792-1809 the rank of Colonel. After that he went into politics.

In the first and second session of Congress was Rhode Iceland was represented only by Benjamin Bourne House of Representatives; the newly added took a seat from the March 4, 1793 Francis Malbone. After four years, he retired again from the first Congress, and returned to his business activities.

In 1807, he became politically active again. Until 1808, he was a member of the House of Representatives from Rhode Iceland. In that year he was elected to the U.S. Senate, where he took the place of Benjamin Howland from March 4, 1809. But Malbones time in the Senate ended abruptly when he died on June 4 of the same year on the steps of the Capitol. He was buried at the Congress Cemetery in Washington.
