Francis Mer

Francis Mer ( born May 25, 1939 in Pau) is a French industrialist and politician.

Career

Mer graduate of the elite Ecole polytechnique in Paris and engineering for mining. In 1970 he joined at Pont -à -Mousson in the group Saint- Gobain. There he occupied successively the positions of the persons responsible for planning (1971 ), the planning conductor ( 1973), the Director-General of the subsidiary Saint- Gobain Industries ( 1974-1978 ), and finally the Deputy Director General of the Group of Companies ( 1978), responsible for industrial policy. In July 1982, he became CEO of the corporation and head of branch for sewer and mechanics.

When the French government as the main shareholder decided the merger of two steel producers Usinor and Sacilor in September 1986, Mer was appointed Chairman of the new steel-producing company. After its privatization in 1995 Mer was also confirmed by the Board as CEO.

Besides Mer is facing since 1988, the French association of steel producing industry.

Also in the association of European steel producers Eurofer he took over the presidency from 1990 to 1997.

On the board of the National Association for Research and Technology, he worked with since 1991.

From 1997 to 1998 he occupied the post of Executive International Iron and Steel Institute.
