Francis Newman

Francis Newman ( * in England? † 1660) was an English colonist in America, 1658-1659 Governor of the New Haven Colony.

Life

Francis Newman was born in England and immigrated in 1634 to New Hampshire. Shortly after his arrival, he moved to Connecticut Valley, where he became known for his handling of the business affairs of the New Haven Colony. 1640 he was admitted as a Freeman, came in 1642 at the rank of ensign ( Ensign ) of the militia at, was Lieutenant of the artillery company in 1645 when it was erected, and in 1647 Secretary of the Plantation.

In 1653 he was one of the commissioners who were sent by the Connecticut River towns to Manhattan to demand reparations from Peter Stuyvesant, governor of New Netherland, for the unrelenting impairment of the English colonists by the Dutch. In July 1654 he was appointed one of the commissioners of the United Colonies of New England. In May 1658 he followed Theophilus Eaton as governor of the New Haven Colony.

Francis Newman was married to Mary Newman, who was married subsequently, after his death, with the Reverend Nicholas Street and Governor William Leete. She died on December 13 in 1683.
