Francis Peabody Magoun

Francis Peabody Magoun ( born January 6, 1895 in New York City; † June 5, 1979 ) was an American professor of literature. He has published about the Middle Ages and the history of football and translated several important texts.

Life

Magoun was born into a wealthy family in New York City. His parents were Francis Peabody Magoun (1865-1928) and Jeanne C. Bartholow ( 1870-1957 ). Although he came from the United States, he served the Royal Air Force ( Royal Flying Corps and later Royal Air Force ) during World War I as a lieutenant. He was awarded the Military Cross (MC ) in June 1918.

After his return to the United States in 1919, he was appointed instructor of comparative literature at Harvard University; during this time he received his doctorate in philology with a thesis in 1923.

In 1937 he became Professor of General and Comparative Literature, 1951 Professor of English. He was still working until 1961.
