Francis Taylor (martyr)

Francis Taylor ( also Francis Tailler, Irish: Proinsias Táilliúir ) (* 1550 in Swords, † January 30, 1621 in Dublin) was Mayor of Dublin ( Mayor of Dublin ) and a martyr.

Francis Taylor was born in 1550 as son of a wealthy family in Swords. In 1595 he was elected Mayor of Dublin, and held this office until 1596. Taylor was also active as a layman in the Archdiocese of Dublin.

Taylor was elected to the Irish House of Commons, but his seat was denied him, because as a staunch Catholic, he refused the Act of Supremacy and Uniformity recognize the. As a result, he was imprisoned end of 1613 or early 1614 and died seven years later, on 30 January 1621 in a prison in Dublin. Taylor was buried in the family grave at St Audeon 's Church. He was married and had six children.

On September 27, 1992 he was beatified as one of 17 Irish martyrs by Pope John Paul II. The commemoration of the Irish martyrs is the 20th June.
