Francisco Fernández Ordóñez

Francisco José Fernández Ordóñez ( born 1930 in Madrid; † August 7, 1992 in Madrid) was a Spanish socialist politician and long-time foreign minister.

Study and career

After studying law at the Complutense University of Madrid and at Harvard University, he became in 1959 an employee of the Ministry. Still under Francisco Franco in 1973, he was Under Secretary in the Ministry of Economy and 1974 President of the National Industry Institute ( INI). However, for political reasons, he resigned already in the same year.

Political career

Still in 1974, he founded the small Social Democratic Party in 1977 with the Unión de Centro Democrático (UCD) the then Prime Minister Adolfo Suárez combined. In his cabinet, he was Minister of Economic Affairs in 1977 initially and then on September 8, 1980 Minister of Justice. On 31 August 1981, he resigned in protest against police brutality as Minister of Justice from back and from the UCD. He then founded the small Democratic Action Party. However Shortly thereafter, he joined the Partido Socialista Obrero Español ( PSOE).

In the elections for Parliament ( Cortes Generales ) In 1982 he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies ( Congreso de los Deputies ). There he represented until his death in the interests of the PSOE.

After the election, he was appointed President of the Bank for Foreign Trade of Prime Minister Felipe González on October 28, 1982. On July 5, 1985, he was appointed foreign minister in the cabinet of González. During his tenure, Spain joined the European Union in 1986. He was also the first half of 1989, the first Spanish President of the Council of the European Union. The Minister of Foreign Affairs he held until shortly before his death and was replaced on June 22, 1992 due to his health by Javier Solana.

In November 1992 him the Doctor Honoris Causa of the Polytechnic University of Valencia was awarded posthumously.
