Francisco Gomes de Amorim

Francisco Gomes de Amorim ( born August 13, 1827 in Averomar, county Póvoa de Varzim, Portugal, † November 4, 1891 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese writer. The representative of Portuguese Romanticism was a novelist, poet and playwright.

Life

Francisco Gomes de Amorim was born as the son of poor peasants. With ten years he wandered, in hopes of a better life, to Brazil. He first worked in Pará with a merchant, and later he worked as a trading assistant and cashier in Belém, Pará also, works. At age 19, he returned in 1846 to Portugal back. By reading the book of poems " Luís de Camões ' of Almeida Garrett, the autodidact was first confronted with literature and began - affected by them - at the age of 15 years to write his first poems. Later he established a lifelong and deep friendship with Almeida Garrett and Joaquim Pedro de Oliveira Martins.

His stay in Brazil had strongly influenced him and flowed directly or indirectly in its literature: he learned some Indian languages ​​, who taught him civilized Indian tribes in the Amazon. He was fascinated by the nature of Amazonia and often in Backlands ( hinterland ) and find the Amazon to observe the local flora and fauna and explore.

After his return to Portugal, he worked in various business professions, before he in 1859 received his position in life: he became the librarian of the Navy Department. During this time he began to build up a regular literary work. He was committed to the romance. The largest selling magazine, for which he wrote, were " O Panorama" and " Revista Universal Lisbonense ". In his later years he devoted himself to the publication of the memoirs of his friend Almeida Garrett, which appeared in 1881. For his commitment to Almeida Garrett, he received the Premio Fernando Cathedral, Academy of Sciences of Lisbon.

Francisco Gomes de Amorim was married to Maria Luisa da Silva Barbosa and father of six children. At the end of his life he was one of the few social climbers of Portuguese society in the 19th century.
