Franciscus Sonnius

Franciscus Sonnius ( born August 12, 1506 Son near Eindhoven, † June 29, 1576 in Antwerp; actually Frans van de Velde ) was the first Roman Catholic Bishop of Antwerp.

Franciscus Sonnius studied in Leuven Catholic theology and philosophy. He received his doctorate in 1539 as a doctor of theology, and was from 1544 Professor of controversial theology at the University of Leuven. He knew from 1549 to 1560, the task of a Inquisitor and took off in 1551 as a representative of the University of Leuven and imperial theologian at the Council of Trent in part. In 1557 it participated at the Colloquy of Worms, 1558/59 he held on behalf of Philip II for the purpose of negotiations on new constructions dioceses in Rome. 1561 Franciscus Sonnius was the first bishop of 's- Hertogenbosch, and in 1570 the first bishop of the Diocese of Antwerp.
