Franciszek Macharski

Franciszek Cardinal Macharski ( born May 20, 1927 in Krakow, Poland) is a retired Archbishop of Krakow.

Life

Franciszek Macharski occurred after the end of World War II into a seminar of Krakow and studied Catholic theology and philosophy. In 1950 he received by the Archbishop of Krakow, Cardinal Adam Stefan Sapieha, ordination to the priesthood and worked for the next six years as a curate in the parish of Kozy. From 1956 to 1960 Macharski completed doctoral studies in Fribourg ( Switzerland ), at the end he gained a PhD in Pastoral Theology.

From 1960 to 1970 he was spiritual director of the seminary of Krakow Municipal and lecturer in pastoral theology at the Pontifical University of the same city. From 1970 to 1977 he headed the then Urban Seminar of Krakow as rector. 1977 he was appointed by the then Archbishop of Krakow, Cardinal Karol Wojtyła, the canon of the Metropolitan Chapter of the Wawel Cathedral.

Archbishop of Krakow, Cardinal

On 29 December 1978 Macharski was appointed by Pope John Paul II to his successor as archbishop of Krakow. The episcopal ordination he received on 6 January of the following year in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome by the pope in person. Co-consecrators were the Auxiliary Bishops of Cracow Julian January Groblicki and Stanisław Smolenski.

Only half a year later took him John Paul II as a Cardinal with the priestly title church of San Giovanni a Porta Latina in the College of Cardinals to. Cardinal Macharski supported as John Paul II the movement Solidarność. After the attempt on the Pope on May 13, 1981, he participated in the organization of the white march.

Cardinal Macharski founded in the Archdiocese of Krakow two weeks magazines and the diocesan Marian radio. In addition, he sat down heavily for families in need and the homeless one.

At the request of children, he received the 1998 International Award as a Cavalier of the Order of the Smile. 2000, the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, he was awarded, in 2007 Cardinal Macharski was a member of the Legion of Honour. In Poland, he received numerous awards weiterre.

He participated in the conclave of 2005. On 1 June 2005, Benedict XVI accepted. his resignation and appointed Stanisław Dziwisz as his successor.

At Conclave 2013 Cardinal Macharski took no further part because of the age limit.
