Franco Marini

Franco Marini ( born April 9, 1933, San Pio delle Camere, L' Aquila Province ) is an Italian politician of the Partito Democratico (PD) and trade unionists. From April 2006 until April 2008, he officiated in the 15th legislative term as President of the Italian Senate.

On April 18, 2013 he was a candidate in two rounds of voting for the office of President of Italy (successor of Giorgio Napolitano ); in both, he did not reach the required two-thirds majority.

Political career

Marini grew up as the eldest son in a large family in modest circumstances of life, studied law after graduation and did his military service in the Alpini from. In 1950, he joined the Christian Democrats.
