Life

François Dumont received his first artistic instruction in Luneville the sculptor Mathis and later by Girardet in Nancy. At age 17, he traveled to Paris, where he became a successful miniature painter was rapidly; In 1786 he was court painter to Marie Antoinette. He held in 1786 in Rome and was a member of the Royal Academy in 1788. In 1789 he married Nicole Vestier, the daughter of the miniaturist Antoine Vestier, and received a year later by King Louis XVI. an apartment in the Louvre. Although connected in the ancien régime with the high aristocracy, Dumont was arrested in September 1793 but later released. From 1789 to 1831 Dumont exhibited regularly in the Salon de Paris. Apparently he give lessons, the miniature painter Tony Dumont and Louis Alexandre are referred to as his students at the Livret the salons.
