François Girard

François Girard ( born January 12, 1963 in Saint -Felicien, Quebec, Canada ) is a Canadian film director and screenwriter.

Life and achievements

His grandfather was a musician. His older sister Doris Girard ( b. 1956 ) is a film producer. François Girard studied music and began his professional career with music videos. He assisted in the film The Woman in Hotel (1984 ) by director Léa Pool. The mid-1980s, he founded the firm Zone Productions and created short films and commercials. When Konzertmitschnitt Secret World Live (1994 ), he worked with Peter Gabriel. From the 1990s, Girard also ventured in movies, for example, 32 Short Films About Glenn Gould ( 1993) with Colm Feore in the title role. The best-known episode of his film The Red Violin, whose film music of John Corigliano in 2000 was honored with an Oscar.

Girard was honored with various awards, among others, he received the 1993 Genie Award as a director of 32 Short Films About Glenn Gould and the Toronto International Film Festival, a Special Jury Mention for Best Canadian feature film. This film was also nominated at the Independent Spirit Awards in 1995 as Best Foreign Film. 1996 Girard won along with other Grammy Award for Secret World Live as the best music video. 1998 Film Festival Best Artistic Contribution Award, he was awarded for The Red Violin at the Tokyo International. In 1999, he received two Genie Awards and twice the Prix Jutra, each for best director and best screenplay for The Red Violin.

On stage, Girard worked as an opera director of the Symphony of Psalms ( Symphony of Psalms ) by Igor Stravinsky and of Oedipus Rex by Stravinsky and Jean Cocteau.
