François van der Delft

Frans van der Dilft also François van der Delft (* around 1500 in Antwerp, † June 14, 1550 in Antwerp) was from 1544 to 1550 ambassador of Charles V at Henry VIII and Edward VI. in England.

Life

His parents were wealthy. He was enrolled on 30 October 1514 the University of Leuven and studied with Conrad Goclenius ( Gockelen † 1539), the professor of Latin in the humanistic Collegium Trilingue was at this time, to Erasmus of Rotterdam had close relationships. Dilft came to Basel and was enrolled at the University of Basel beginning of the winter semester 1524-1525.

Erasmus set Frans van der Dilft, the household lived with him on February 10, 1525 in Basel and it served as a courier to Franciscus van Cranevelt ( 1485-1564 ) in Mechelen, before and canons from Antwerp. He brought a letter from Erasmus to John of Vlatten next, he worked as a secretary for Erasmus and paying boarder.

At Christmas 1525 Erasmus wrote him a letter of recommendation to Nicolaas Ever Aerts, and Frans van Dilft returned to Antwerp.

In 1536 he was back in the imperial service.

1537 he was with Nikolaas van der seas mayor of Antwerp.

Charles V sent him as Ambassador of 1544 to the Court of St James's to Henry VIII in England.

He was recalled in 1550 in the Spanish Netherlands. Subsequently, he was involved in a failed attempt to marry Mary Tudor, ( a cousin of Charles V ) in the Netherlands.
