François Verwilt

François Verwilt ( * ca 1623 [ Note 1 ] in Rotterdam, † 1691 ) was a Dutch painter.

Life

As the son of the painter Adriaen Verwilt (Antwerp 1582-1639 ). It is clear that Verwilt with Johann Liss, Jan Baptist Weenix, Jan van Haensbergen and Daniel Vertangen pupil of Cornelis van Poelenburgh (1586-1667) was from Utrecht. Verwilt specialized not only to the history and landscape painting of his teacher. Although he painted a series of religious biblical scenes in landscapes as Poelenburgh, including a number of Marie pictures that were meant more customers for Catholic (probably Flemish ), but also bourgeois interiors of festivals and games as well as scenes of peasant genre painting. There are also portraits and still lifes. His coloring is cool enamel -like, but he later painted pictures in the style of Rembrandt with chiaroscuro effects in shades of brown. Main activity in Utrecht and Rotterdam, where he lived all his life. He also had a shorter time in Middelburg (Zeeland) and was a member of the Guild of St. Luke. His pupils were Cornelis Cingelaar and Peter Hovius.

His paintings are in museums in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Haarlem, Budapest, Leningrad, Mainz, Osnabrück, Paris, Vienna. It lacks an in-depth biography or monograph on his works.
