François Victor Alphonse Aulard

François- Alphonse Aulard ( born July 19, 1849 in Montbron, † October 23, 1928 in Paris) is a leading historian of the French Revolution. He founded the modern revolution history and his writings scattered many of the myths that had surrounded the revolution until then.

Aulard his doctorate in 1877 and taught until 1884 French Literature in various provincial universities. In 1879 he began studying the French Revolution. In 1887 he was appointed to the University of Paris to the new chair for the history of the French Revolution. He specialized in the documentation of the revolutionary epoch, and issued several collections of documents. The important scientific magazine La Révolution française, founded in 1881 ( it was published until 1939), appeared from 1888 onwards (as Aulard President of them issuing Société de l' Histoire de la Revolution Française, which he held until his death remained ) as well under his supervision how various memoirs of revolutionaries.

Politically Aulard was active. He was founder and president of the League for Human Rights, which was established during the Dreyfus Affair and co-founder of the Quotidien, an independent Democratic journal. He chaired the 1927 International Congress of the League of Nations in Berlin.
