Franeker

Franeker ( Frisian Frjentsjer ) is a town in the Dutch province of Friesland. As capital of the municipality Franekeradeel it counts 13,500 inhabitants.

Location and Transport

The city is located on Van Harinxmakanal, between Harlingen and Leeuwarden in the west to the east, and has a railway station.

Industry

In the city there is a shipyard, a factory for office furniture and some minor industrial companies.

History

The city, founded in the 11th century was from 1585 to 1811 a university. During the Second World War some German naval units were stationed here. Between 1591 and 1594 the town hall was built in the Renaissance style. 1760 was awarded the building a western cultivation.

Attractions

A special attraction of the picturesque town are the Church of St. Martin (1420-1425), City Hall (1591-1594) in Renaissance style, the Royal ice - Eisinga Planetarium (1774-1781, because of his age unique in the world ) as well as many historic buildings and canals.

  • In the city every year on the Sjûkelân the tournament Permanente Commissie (PC) in the Frisian ball sports " Kaatsen " aligned.
  • By Franeker, the route of elfstedentocht, the famous skating marathon race along the eleven Frisian cities.
