Frank Barnett

Frank Barnett ( born 1933 ) is an American politician. Between October 1976 and May 1977 he was Governor of American Samoa.

Career

Frank Barnett worked as a lawyer in Tennessee. At times, he also worked as an agent for the FBI. Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party. Between 1974 and 1976 he was Lieutenant Governor of American Samoa.

On October 1, 1976 Barnett was appointed as the successor of Earl B. Ruth as the new Governor of American Samoa and introduced in January 1977 in this office. He held this position until 27 May 1977. His tenure was not without controversy. The population of its territory was divided into two camps. A group accused him of exploitation and utilization of the locals. the other supported him. The conflict was triggered by the dismissal of the then Minister of Education Mere Betham. This was soon out again, and the conflict was gradually mitigated. In May 1977, Barnett was replaced by Hyrum Rex Lee.
