Frank Bethwaite

Frank Dewar Bethwaite OAM ( born May 26 1920 in Wanganui, New Zealand, † 12 May 2012) was a designer of sailing dinghies from Sydney.

Life

Bethwaite flew in the 40's as a pilot of seaplanes in scheduled service. He discovered his interest in aerodynamics and the systematics of the wind. In his spare time, he built model gliders with which he broke the world record for nonstop flight duration reached.

Later he emigrated to Australia and has since lived in Sydney. There he devoted himself to the sport of sailing. On the one hand, he constructed several dinghies and skiffs, on the other hand, he led so well by numerous basic experiments and measurements.

Frank Bethwaite was also successful coach of the Australian sailors at several Olympic Games. These sailors were also several members of his family. Three of his relatives won this gold medals. His son Julian Bethwaite is one of the most successful designers of sailing dinghies.

Frank Bethwaite has with his books High Performance Sailing ( German title: High Performance Sailing ) ( German title: High Performance Sailing 2) and the continuation Higher Performance Sailing created basic works that cover the entire range of performance-oriented sailing and particularly addresses the function of the skiffs.
