Frank E. Hughes

Frank Edgar Hughes ( born June 14, 1893 in Kern County, California, † April 26, 1947 ) was an American art director, who in 1946 was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Production Design, winning the Oscar in this category at the Academy Awards 1947.

Life

Hughes began his career as an art director and production designer in the film industry in Hollywood in 1927 with the film Time To Love and worked until 1947 at the scenic features of more than twenty films.

At the Academy Awards in 1946 he was with James Basevi, William S. Darling and Thomas Little for the Academy Award for Best Production Design in the black and white film Keys of the Kingdom (The Keys of the Kingdom, 1944), one directed by John M. Stahl film drama with Gregory Peck, Thomas Mitchell, and Vincent Price in the lead roles.

Together with Lyle R. Wheeler, Darling and Little, he won the Oscar in this category in 1947 for the black and white film Anna and the King of Siam (1946 ), one based on the novel by Margaret Landon film by director John Cromwell with Irene Dunne, Rex Harrison and Linda Darnell.
